Evolution of the Disc Golf Bag

A while back we asked you to tell us the difference between a disc golf backpack and a Grip Bag. We limited your answers to 100 words, but our answer is one: DESIGN. Remember, though, design is a whole lot more than a strong logo and a bag that looks good on your back. Design is both art and science, and when you get down to it, the science comes first. It's anatomy, physics, materials science, psychology, anthropology, ecology, logistics, and more... with a pretty face.

But instead of just throwing these words out there, lets take a deeper look...

One of our favorite things to watch is the expression on someone’s face at, say a tournament flymart, when they take all of their stuff out of their old bag, put it in a Grip bag, and then put it on their back. There's this look of relief, even disbelief, but what's behind it?

A lot goes into that feeling of relief -- curved TORSOFORM(TM) straps instead of straight ones, the bag's teardrop shape instead of a cube, strap origins on the back of the bag instead of the top, limiting the bag to a single moment of inertia, the location, shape, and relative thickness of the back padding, etc, etc...

But the most important issue is the simplest one -- the position of the weight. Lets build a bag and see how this works.

For the mechanical engineers, the goals here are to reduce angular momentum and to reduce the shear force of the cantilevered load. In simpler terms, we want the heavy stuff to be as close to the center of the bag and as close to your back as possible.

As a unit, your set of discs is the heaviest thing you carry. So we want them in the middle of the bag and as close to your body as possible. This is why the putter pocket and extra disc space isn't off to the side or at the very back of your bag.

Next we deal with the water. When full, your water bottles are dense and heavy, so it's important to keep them from rolling around and get them as close to the center of your body as possible. Clothes and towels are bulky, but low density and flexible, so they go in the side pockets. The miscellaneous small things fit in the valuable pocket front pouch or other small inner pockets. Securing your smaller items in the inner pockets does more than just organize them for you. It also holds them in place so they don't jostle around. In general, the fewer things you have jostling around, the better your bag is going to perform when it's in motion.
